For church congregations, acoustic clarity and vocal intelligibility are of paramount importance. Of equal importance for many church sound system operators is ease of use. One such church is a very impressive baroque church in Vienna, Austria, St. Anns Cathedral. The architecturally stunning church, featuring ceiling frescos by Daniel Gran, was recently renovated and received a complete audio system upgrade to modernize its technology. One of the most important elements of the new audio system installed by 4solutions Biba Roth Thomasberger OEG is that it guarantees user-friendliness. The previous audio system hadnt been used for months because it was difficult to operate, explained 4solutions Jan Thomasberger. During a renovation project, the church requested a less complicated system be installed, but without sacrificing audio quality and clarity. With the use of the AS8 automatic mixer, the steps necessary to use the system were reduced to just the main switch. The system chosen for installation in the cathedral consists of an AKG WMS400 wireless system, an AKG AS 8 TC automatic microphone mixer, an AKG C680BL boundary-layer microphone and two AKG GN 155 gooseneck modules with CK 33 capsules. The WMS 400s user-friendly configuration requires very few steps to operate, and with the thin, unobtrusive GN Series gooseneck microphones, users are guaranteed reliable, yet inconspicuous audio support. The radio microphone was to be used both in the entire church and in the adjacent chapel. The only way to meet this requirement was to install two RA 4000 B antennas in the church.
